The Old Mill Hotel is located at 21 Old Mill Road, which is off of Bloor Street overlooking the Humber River, and is within walking distance of the Old Mill subway station making it very easy to access by public transportation.
Opened in 1914 by R. Home Smith next to the ruins of an old grist mill. Originally it was a restaurant named the Old Mill Tea Garden and was part of a residential development plan for the area by Smith. The property is also close to the site on which Toronto’s first sawmill was reportedly built in the late 1700s. Interestingly, a number of different saw mills were built on the site from the late 1700s to the late 1800s, every single one of which was destroyed by fire.
Over the decades, the site has expanded to its current form, which includes over 15 banquet rooms, a wedding chapel and a hotel and spa. The hotel opened in 1981 and has 45 rooms and 13 suites. The site is an extremely popular wedding venue, and in the summer it is difficult to visit the hotel on weekends without being overwhelmed by weddings.
Since it opened in 1914, the restaurant has served afternoon tea. It is now also well known as a great place for Sunday brunch. As well, the Old Mill Tea Garden was a popular local entertainment venue often featuring dancing to live big band music throughout the 1920s.
The hotel was designated a heritage property in 1983 by the city of Etobicoke.
