Between The Eyes is a piece by artist Richard Deacon. It is located at the corner of Yonge Street and Queens Quay East. Installation took place in 1990, after the piece was commissioned by Camrost Development Corporation to anchor the plaza located at the corner.
Deacon was born in Wales and studied art in England. He is an abstract artist and mostly uses everyday materials to (as he puts is) fabricate his art. Interestingly, Deacon was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1999.
Interestingly Deacon used technical drawings to create it – instead of making a model….made from steel / concrete / granite
Two large steel skeleton frames laced together in the shape of partly blown up long horizontal balloons – one balloon parallels Queen’s Quay and the other Yonge Street. In the middle, it seems they are pinched together so as to keep any more air from escaping.
Although the sculpture is massive – you can walk under / around / through it – the placement of the piece at the south east corner of the plaza makes it seem very isolated.
