The View From Below: Ripley’s Aquarium

Ripley’s Aquarium is one of my favourite places in Toronto!  Located next to the CN Tower, it opened in October of 2013 and contains more than 5.7 million litres of sea and freshwater exhibits.  The exhibits hold over 20,000 specimens!

In this blog, I will explore my favourite exhibits and share shots of my favourite creatures!

The first exhibit is Canadian Waters.  It houses 17 habitats with animals such Paddle Fish, American Lobsters a Giant Pacific Octopus and Large Mouth Bass in a Kelp Forest.

The Octopus is one of the most frustrating animals in the entire aquarium as it rarely comes out of the darker corners of it’s habitat – but it is quite a site!

The next exhibit is the Rainbow Reef which contains a plethora of species of reef fish and corals. There are so many species in this exhibit that each time I visit, I always find something new!

The next habitat is the premier habitat in the aquarium.  The Dangerous Lagoon contains almost 3 million litres and has the longest moving sidewalk in North America.  Visitors are transported through a habitat and literally surrounded by a variety of sea creatures including sharks, a sting-ray and sea turtles!  This exhibit is truly something to behold!

Moving out of the Lagoon, visitors enter the Gallery exhibit which is comprised of a variety of smaller habitats which house animals such as clown fish, lion fish and seahorses.

Next on my list is Ray Bay.  This is one of the most popular habitats and houses a number of different species of rays in a 350,000 litre tank.  The rays are a joy to watch as they seem to fly through the water and smile at you while swimming by.

The final habitat on my list is Planet Jellies.  This exhibit displays 5 different species of jellyfish, with the most popular habitat being the large, colour-changing tank housing pacific sea nettles.

There is so much to do and see at the aquarium, that a single visit is not sufficient.  Have you ever been?  I would love to see some shots from your visit!

I would also appreciate hearing what you liked about this post!

Until then – one final shot of my absolute favourite animal in the aquarium!
