Clocks and Clock Towers

Walking around the city, there are may cool things to see – some of those are the different examples of clocks and clock towers that are on display.  Some examples of those are the following.

 

Summerhill LCBO

The clock tower at the Summerhill LCBO.  This building is formerly part of a Canadian Pacific Railway train station.  The clock tower itself is built of limestone and is 140 feet high.

 

UCC Clocktower 2

The Clock tower at Upper Canada College, which is a private school located in Toronto.  UCC first opened in 1829 (at a temporary location in downtown) and has been at its currently location since the late 1800s.

King Bathurst condo Clock Suite

The clock tower at 700 King St, at the corner of King and Bathurst, is a condo, which you can stay in for $499 on Airbnb.  It was built in the early 1900s and used to be part of a building that was a piano factory.

 

The clock tower at Old City Hall is probably one of the most iconic buildings in Toronto and located at the foot of Bay at Queen street.  Construction of the building was completed in 1899 – which included the 340-foot tall tower, which was the tallest structure in the Canada from 1899-1917.

 

Union Station

The clock outside of Union Station: the antique clock was restored and unveiled in 2015 as part of the upgrade to the façade and plaza on Front Street outside Union Station.

The clock inside Union Station is in the newly renovated great hall,  located at the information desk above the arrivals and departures board.

 

RY

This clock is located just inside the main doors in the middle of the lobby of the Royal York Hotel.  It is the centerpiece of a staircase leading to and from the lower level of the hotel.

 

Distillery Clock 2

The clock is located in the main square of the Distillery District, which is one of the top tourist attractions in Canada and one of the most unique places to visit in the city.

 

Scotiabank Upright Right

This piece is located inside the Scotiabank Plaza’s banking hall.  Construction of the bank was completed in 1951 and it is a great example of an Art Deco building.

 

UofT Clock Tower

The Soldiers’ Tower at Hart House.  This 143-foot tall structure is a memorial to members of the University of Toronto who gave their lives while on active service.  It was built from 1923-1924 using funds raised by U of T Alumni Association.  The clock itself was purchased in 1927.

Yonge Collge Clock Tower Side

The clock tower at Yonge and Grosvenor – it was built in 1872 and used to be the clock tower for a Fire Hall.  Over the years, as buildings were torn down and built up, this clock tower has remained.  It has been part of different retail stores as well as some restaurants and taverns.  It was designated a heritage site in 1974.
