The Pasture

The Toronto Dominion Centre Plaza is located in the heart of the Financial District – and happens to be populated by 7 life-size bronze cows, which are the work of Canadian artist Joe Fafard.

The piece, known as “The Pasture”, was originally installed in 1985 at the TD Waterhouse Tower just across the street from its current location at 77 King Street West. It has been moved between these locations numerous times over the years due to construction at the different properties. (Hmmm…construction in Toronto you say?)

The Pasture is a hugely popular public art display with both residents and tourists alike, People of all ages enjoy having their pictures taken sitting on the cows. On weekdays, business people eating lunch or reading amongst the herd are a common sight.

Interestingly, having done some research about The Pasture, I learned another piece (The Ring by Al McWilliams) was installed along with it at the same location.  However, it did not strike the same chord with the public, and was removed in 2008. This resulted in some discussion at the time as to why The Pasture was so popular with the public.

Personally, I find that question simple to answer; a herd of copper cows lounging between skyscrapers is not an expected site in the downtown core, and seeing something so unexpected is not only unique, but also kinda cool.
