A Stitch in Time

Welcome to my next “How To” series in which I demonstrate how to create an image when lacking proper equipment to capture an entire scene with one shot. As with previous posts my hope is to inspire and create discussion.

Let’s get started!

THE FINAL PRODUCT

This is the shot I wanted. How did I achieve it?

CONCEPT

While walking down the street in Old Quebec City, I saw this Steakhouse and knew I wanted to create an image which showcased the stonework and shadows. To make the shot more unique, I envisioned a colour splash image highlighting the red trim.

EQUIPMENT & CAPTURE

Normally, to capture a building such as this, I use a wide angle lens. Unfortunately, all I have with me at this time is my 35mm prime lens. Not able to capture the entire exterior with a single shot, I have to be creative achieve my goal. Fortunately, I think of an easy solution – taking multiple shots and merging them together!

When using this technique, I find there are 2 important things to remember:

  1. Take all shots from exactly the same perspective
  2. Ensure that successive shots contain enough of the same information to be able to merge them together.

For example:

As you can see, I took the shots from the same perspective (from the top down), and included the same windows in each subsequent shot.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHOTS

After taking a number of images I have the shots I need to work with. In this case, I choose these 9 to merge together:

Looking at the shots in the grid, it may seem a little like a bit of a hodgepodge, but because I followed the suggestions laid out above, merging the shots in Lightroom produces this:

In my next post in this series, I will outline exactly how to merge multiple shots in Lightroom!
